Weight and Dimension Restrictions
Truck enforcement exits to provide safe passage through Lombard for all motor vehicle traffic as they share the roads with larger and heavier commercial vehicle. The Traffic Safety Unit strictly enforces overweight/overweight commercial vehicles. The Village of Lombard has seen a growing number of commercial motor vehicle traffic through the town. A study was done in 1990 determined that one 80,000 lbs. truck does as much damage to the roads as 900 cars. Heavy trucks stress the pavement, and the freeze-thaw cycles we experience in the Chicago land area cause the roads to crack and create potholes.
Oversize/Overweight Permits
You need a permit for any movement on the Village of Lombard maintained highway with a non-divisible load that exceeds the following maximum weights and dimensions:
- Gross Vehicle Weight – 80,000 lbs.;
- Single Axle – 20,000 lbs.;
- Tandem Axle – 34,000 lbs.;
- Width – 8’6″;
- Height – 13’6″;
- Length – 55′.
Non-Designated and Designated Routes
All local roads within the Village of Lombard are non-designated. Rt. 64, Rt. 38 and Rt. 53 are designated roads. The main difference is that designated roads are built to different specifications to accommodate heavier and larger trucks.
There are many exceptions and variations of weight and size between two kinds of roads.
In the mid-1980’s, the Federal Government required all states to designate highways up to 80,000 lbs. gross weight. Until that time, all roads in Illinois had a maximum gross weight of 73,280 lbs. While most designated highways are State highways, local municipalities and counties can designate certain roads. Designated roads are by far an exception. A rule to remember is this: All local roads in the Village of Lombard are non-designated. Rt. 64, Rt. 53, and Rt. 38 are designated (80,000 lbs. gross weight). Ir should be noted that Rt. 56 (Butterfield Rd.) is a non-designated State road in the Village of Lombard. As of 1/1.2010 all road became 80,000 lbs. unless posted otherwise.
