Michigan Heavy Haul Trucking FAQ
What kind of permits will I need to transport cargo through Michigan?
The driver of an oversized load needs to obtain a permit from the state of Michigan. Super load carriers will also need special permits.
Some counties in Michigan have restricted travel times for oversize loads, regardless of permits obtained, and travel is not allowed on major holidays and holiday weekends. Standard loads undeer 10′ wide are currently permitted weekend travel.
24-hour advance notification is typically required crossing Mackinaw Bridge or Ambassador Bridge between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, Canada.
When you work with Titan for your trucking needs, our truck drivers will take care of all the Michigan oversize permits required to ship your load, as well any permits required by other states the shipment will be transported through. We will also perform route surveys and create a logistics plan to ensure the most efficient travel schedule. That means no delays, no fines, and no hassle for our clients! Delivering your shipment safely and on time is our top priority.
Will I need an escort to transport my cargo through Michigan?
Escort requirements are determined by the final size of your shipment. At a minimum, all overdimensional loads must display “Oversize Load” on both front and rear, with an additional flag at the widest point if the cargo extends beyond the corner flags.
Different types of escorts are required based on the load size:
- One Escort: Over 90′ long, 12′ wide, and if 14’5″ high – one escort with a high pole
- Two Escorts: Over 100′ long, 164′ wide, and if over 15′ – two escorts and a route survey must be submitted and approved
If a Mackinaw Bridge crossing is scheduled in your shipment’s route, escorts will be provided (no charge) for loads exceeding legal weight or 10′ wide.
Our specialized freight hauling team is committed to finding safe routes for our heavy haul loads and making the process hassle-free for our customers. Our truck drivers will make all the arrangements if pilot cars are needed for any of the locations your cargo will travel through, whether through the midwest, Canada, or all the way to Mexico.
What's considered an oversized load in Michigan?
In Michigan, the legal dimensions for standard truck loads, including rear overhang, are 53′ long, 8’6″ wide, and 13’6″ high, with a gross weight ranging from 80,000 .
Routine oversize permits are required for loads up to 150′. Loads exceeding these dimensions are considered super loads and will require additional permitting time.

What kind of trailers do you have for handling heavy equipment?
Our specialty is transporting heavy construction, agriculture, oilfield goods, and other types of equipment throughout Michigan and across the country. Our solutions, resources, and trucking equipment are tailored to the specific needs of each business.
For example, a common option is our flatbed trailer. The maximum weight of this trailer is 48,000 pounds.
for extremely heavy loads, we’ll typically utilize our removable gooseneck RGN trailer. The maximum weight of this trailer is over 150,000 pounds. This option is ideal for heavy and large items that can’t be transported inside a trailer.
No matter what the job requires—whether a gooseneck, flatbed, or a step deck trailer—our professionals will match your specific freight to the best trailer for the shipment, and guarantee to load and deliver it safely and professionally.
