What kind of permits will I need to transport cargo through Washington?

The driver of an oversized load needs to obtain a permit from the state of Washington. Super load carriers will also need special permits.

Will I need an escort to transport my cargo through Washington?

A pilot/escort vehicle and operator must comply with the requirements of WAC 468-38-100 Escort vehicle requirements. Pilots/Escort vehicles are required when:

  • Vehicles or load is over 11′ in width; escort cars (both front and rear) are required on all two lane highways.
  • Vehicles or load is over 14′ wide one rear escort vehicle is required on multiple-lane highways.
  • Trailer length including load exceeds 105′ of a tractor/trailer combination, requires a rear escort car on all two-lane highways.
  • Trailer length including load exceeds 125′ of a tractor/trailer combination, requires a rear escort car on multiple-lane highways.
  • Rear overhang of a tractor/trailer or truck/trailer combination exceeds 1/3 of the trailer length including load, requires one rear escort on two lane highways.
  • Rear overhang exceeds 20′ of a single unit vehicle, requires one rear escort car on two-lane highways.
  • Loads that exceed 14′ 6″ high require one escort vehicle in front equipped with a height pole.

In Washington, the legal dimensions for standard trucks and loads, including overhang, are 53′ long, 8’6″ wide, and 14′ high, with a gross weight ranging from 80,000 .

What kind of trailers do you have for handling heavy equipment?
