Iowa Heavy Haul Trucking FAQ

What kind of permits will I need to transport cargo through Iowa?

The carrier of an oversized load needs to obtain a permit from the state of Iowa. Superload carriers will also need special permits.

When you work with Titan for your trucking needs, our truck drivers will take care of all the permitting needs required to ship your load through Iowa, as well as any other states the shipment will be transported through. That means no delays, no fines, and no hassle for our clients! That’s what makes Titan one of the best trucking companies to work with in Iowa.

Safe and timely delivery is our primary focus.

Will I need an escort to transport my cargo through Iowa?

Escort requirements are determined by the final size of your shipment. At a minimum, all oversize loads/vehicles must display “Oversize Load” on both front and rear.

Different types of escorts are required based on the load size:

  • One Escort: Over 110′ long, 14’6″ wide, and 14’6″ high with a high pole
  • Three Escorts: Over 145′ long, 16′ wide
  • State Police: Over 200′ long, 18′ wide
  • Two Escorts & State Police: Over 18′ high.

Our team is committed to making the process hassle-free for our customers. Our truck drivers will make all the arrangements if pilot cars are needed for any of the locations your load will be shipped through, whether through the Great Plains, up to Canada, or all the way down to Mexico.

What's considered an oversized load in Iowa?

In Iowa, the legal dimensions for standard trucks and loads, including overhang, are 75′ long, 8’6″ wide, and 14’4″ high, with a gross weight on any axle not exceeding 20,000 pounds, with a maximum of 156,000 pounds total gross weight

Freight that exceeds these dimensions will require a routine oversize permit. Iowa considers loads, super loads, if it is greater than 5 axles, grossing over 100,000 pounds and/or over 44,000 pounds on a tandem group, or 6 or more axles, grossing over 120,000 pounds and/or over 48,000 pounds on any axle group.

Titan Worldwide has experience working with the rules and regulations of Wyoming. Our logistics team creates a tailored shipping solution for each client so you don’t have to worry about anything.

How much does it cost to ship oversized loads in Iowa?

You can generally expect to pay between $2.30 and $10 per mile. Many factors affect the cost of shipping goods, including:

  • Load size
  • Type of goods
  • Mileage and designated routes
  • Pick up and destination location
  • Time of year and trucking demand
  • Number and type of permits required
  • Escort requirements

What kind of trailers do you have for handling heavy equipment?

Our specialty is transporting heavy construction, agriculture, oilfield goods, and other types of equipment throughout Iowa and across the country. Our solutions, resources, and trucking equipment are tailored to the specific needs of each business.

For example, for extremely heavy loads, we’ll typically utilize our removable gooseneck RGN trailer. The maximum weight of this trailer is over 150,000 pounds. This option can accommodate very heavy and large items that can’t get transported inside a trailer.

Another common option is our flatbed trailer. The maximum weight of this trailer is 48,000 pounds.

No matter what the job requires—whether a gooseneck, flatbed, or a step deck trailer—our professionals will match your specific freight to the best trailer for the shipment, and guarantee to load and deliver it safely and professionally.

Note: The Iowa Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Office of Motor Vehicle Enforcement (MVE) is reporting an increase in questions related to safe and lawful trailer hitch attachment in Iowa. The majority of questions relate to whether truck drivers must remove the trailer hitch from the vehicle when a trailer is not attached. There is no Iowa law that requires a hitch be removed when a trailer is not in tow.
