New York Equipment Transport Routes
Eight interstates make an appearance in the state, including:
- I-81 – runs north/south through Syracuse in the middle of the state, from Canada to Pennsylvania;
- I-84 – goes east/west across the southeastern tip of the state, from Pennsylvania to Connecticut;
- I-86 – runs east/west along the state’s southern border, from Pennsylvania to I-87;
- I-87 – travels north/south down the eastern side of the state, from Canada to New Jersey;
- I-88 – runs diagonally northeast across the middle of the state, from I-81 near Binghamton to I-88 near Schenectady;
- I-90 – runs east/west across the northern portion of the state, from Canada to Massachusetts;
- I-95 – travels for a short stretch north/south down the eastern edge of the state, between Connecticut and New Jersey.

Steel Hauler Overweight Permits
- Valid only between Interchanges 49 and 56 (I-90) including Niagara Section to N 17 ( I-190).
- Steel Hauler permits commence May 1 of the year acquired and ending April 30 of the following year. These same permits will be available to late applicants on the nine, six and three month prorated basis.
- Require a NYS DOT Steel Hauler permit.
- Insurance requirements includes CERTIFICATE OF LIABILITY INSURANCE (ACORD 25) and a NYS THRUWAY AUTHORITY SUPPLEMENTAL INSURANCE CERTIFICATE (TA-W51343).
- All other vehicle dimensions must meet legal requirements.
- Approved power unites with Steel Hauler permits may carry lower Category loads without further approval, as long as the load is equal to or less than the Maximum Weight for that Category. Additional trailers will be accepted when listed on company’s official letterhead and signed by an authorized company representative.
- All vehicles using a Steel Hauler permit must carry a copy of the approved application in the vehicle.
- Suspension of your State Steel Hauler permit will result in suspension of this permit.
- Any violation of these permit restrictions will terminate the Permit and the vehicle will be subject to Special Hauling fees and overweight fines.
