New York Heavy Haul Trucking FAQ

What kind of permits will I need to transport cargo through New York?

The driver of an oversized load needs to obtain New York oversize permits. Super load carriers will also need special permits.

A special New York City permit is also needed if traveling through the NYC area. Travel restrictions through the city are numerous, and permits/escorts are expensive. Travel through the business districts is restricted during rush hour. Oversize loads exceeding 10′ wide require night moves, except on Interstate and truck routes. A route survey required to get permit. Special permission may also be needed on bridges going into NYC.

A separate permit is also required for commercial transport on the New York Thruway. Loads over 13’6″ height are not allowed. NYC Thruway includes I-87 (NYC to Albany), I-95 (NYC to Connecticut), I-287 (connecting I-87 with I-95), I-90, and I-190 (connecting Buffalo with Niagara Falls).

When you work with Titan for your trucking needs, our drivers will take care of all the permitting needs required to ship your load through New York, as well any other states the shipment will be transported through. That means no delays, no fines, and no hassle for our clients! Delivering your shipment safely and on time is our top priority.

Will I need an escort to transport my cargo through New York?

Escort requirements are determined by the final size of your shipment. At a minimum, all oversize loads/vehicles must display “Oversize Load” on both front and rear.

If oversized loads are traveling on one of New York’s highways, one escort is required for lengths over 80′, width over 12′, or height over 14′. Two escorts or more are required for length over 100′, width over 16′ or a height more than 15′.

Oversize loads traveling through New York City require one escort if overall length exceeds the legal length of 65 feet, whether the trailer contains freight or is empty after dropping a load in NYC area.

Our team is committed to making the process hassle-free for our customers. Our drivers will make all the arrangements if pilot cars are needed for any of the locations your cargo will travel through the United States, Canada or all the way to Mexico.

What's considered an oversized load in New York?

In New York, the legal dimensions for standard trucks and loads, including overhang, are 53′ long, 8’6″ wide, and 13’6″ high, with a gross weight ranging from 80,000.

Super loads in New York are any vehicle or combination which is:

  • over 16′ wide
  • 16′ or greater in height
  • Over 160′ in length
  • 200,000 pounds or greater in gross weight

Titan Worldwide has experience working with the rules and regulations of New York. Our logistics team will create a tailored shipping solution so you don’t have to worry about anything.

For more details on oversize permits and dimensions, see our New York Permits page.

How much does it cost to ship oversized loads in New York?

You can generally expect to pay between $2.30 and $10 per mile for heavy haul loads through New York. Many factors affect the cost of shipping goods, including:

  • Load size
  • Type of goods
  • Mileage and designated routes
  • Pick up and destination location
  • Time of year and trucking demand
  • Number and type of permits required
  • Escort requirements

Your all-inclusive quote will include a route survey and advice on permitting and traffic law in NY state and the NYC area. Our logistics and carrier teams will work with the New York State Department of Transportation and the U.S. Department of Transportation to provide for all permit and escort requirements.

What kind of trailers do you have for handling heavy equipment?

Our specialty is transporting heavy construction, agriculture, oilfield goods, and other types of equipment throughout New York and across the country. Our solutions, resources, and trucking equipment are tailored to the specific needs of each business.

For example, a common option in our heavy haul fleet are our flatbed trailers, which offer a maximum weight of 48,000 pounds.

For many super loads, we’ll utilize our removable gooseneck RGN trailer (also called lowboy trailers). The maximum weight of this trailer is over 150,000 pounds. This option is ideal for very large items over the maximum height for hauling inside a trailer.

No matter what specialized transportation is required —whether a bucket truck, flatbed, or one of our step deck trailers—our team will match the unique needs of your overweight freight to the best trailer for the job, and guarantee to load and deliver it safely and professionally.
