Delaware Tire Regulations

Studded tires are permitted from October 15 – April 15 and tire chains of reasonable proportions may be used upon any vehicle when required for safety because of snow, ice or other conditions tending to cause a vehicle to slide or skid.

Tread depth must be at least 2/32 inch measured in two adjacent treads.

Every solid rubber tire on a vehicle moved on any highway shall have rubber at least 1 inch thick above the edge of the flange of the entire periphery on its entire traction surface.

Projections from periphery of tires; exceptions.

(a) No tire on a vehicle moved on a highway shall have on its periphery any block, stud, flange, cleat or spike or any other protuberances of any material other than rubber which projects beyond the tread of the traction surface of the tire, except as otherwise provided in this section. Farm machinery with tires having protuberances which will not injure the highway may be used, and tire chains of reasonable proportions may be used upon any vehicle when required for safety because of snow, ice or other conditions tending to cause a vehicle to slide or skid.

(b) The use of studded tires on all motor vehicles using the highways of this State is permitted from October 15 to April 15.

Speed Limitation for Vehicles Regulated According to Weight and Equipment:

PNEUMATIC TIRES

Provided, that it shall be lawful to operate passenger carrying motor coaches equipped with pneumatic tires and not weighing in excess of 15,000 pounds gross weight of vehicle and load, and equipped with four wheel brakes, at a rate of speed not in excess of that provided in Section 83 of this Act.

SOLID TIRES

Every person convicted of a misdemeanor for a violation of any of the provisions of Sections 121 ( restrictions as to tire requirement ) hall be punished for the first offense by a fine of not less than Ten Dollars ($10.00) nor more than One Hundred Dollars ($100.), or imprisonment for not less than ten (10) days nor more than thirty (30) days, or both such fine and imprisonment, and for each subsequent like offense shall be punished by a fine of not less than Fifty Dollars ($50.00) nor more than Two Hundred Dollars ($200.00), or by imprisonment for not less than fifteen (15) days nor more than thirty (30) days, or by both such fine and imprisonment.
