South Carolina Equipment Transport Routes
The major interstate highways in the state include:
- I-20 – east/west across the middle of the state, from Georgia to I-95 near Florence;
- I-26 – goes north/south across the middle of the state, from North Carolina to Charleston;
- I-77 – travels north/south in the middle of the state, from North Carolina to Columbia;
- I-85 – runs diagonally northwest in the northwestern corner of the state, between North Carolina and Georgia;
- I-95 – runs north/south through the eastern portion of the state, between North Carolina and Georgia.
SCDMV – Trucking/Commercial Vehicles for Heavy Machinery Shipping
Any motor carrier with base jurisdiction in South Carolina and operating one or more qualified motor vehicles in at least one other IFTA/IRP member jurisdiction must apply for an SC IFTA/IRP credential or trip permits must be obtained to travel through member jurisdictions.

To open a new IFTA account, complete all of the following:
- New IFTA Account Checklist (SCDMV Form IFTA-13)
- Application for IFTA Credentials (SCDMV Form IFTA-1)
- Power of Attorney Authorization Form (SCDMV Form MC-25)
- Motor Carrier Web Entry Access Application (SCDMV Form MC-26)
- Agreement to Prepare and Maintain Records (SCDMV Form MC-7)
To open a new IRP account, complete all of the following:
- New IRP Account Checklist (SCDMV Form IRP-8)
- Schedule A/E
- Schedule B
- Operational Lease (SCDMV Form IRP-9)
- Financial Lease Agreement (SCDMV Form IRP-10)
- Power of Attorney Authorization Form (SCDMV Form MC-25)
- Motor Carrier Web Entry Access Application (SCDMV Form MC-26)
- Agreement to Prepare and Maintain Records (SCDMV Form MC-7)
Finally, read the MCS Manual for further information on all MCS programs.. Once you complete all forms above, click on this link, email them to the SCDMV. All forms and documents must be submitted from the email address of the individual/business that is opening the new IRP/IFTA account.
Branches for Motor Carrier Services
You may open new International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) and International Registration Plan (IRP) accounts only at Motor Carrier Services (MCS) in Blythewood. There are seven SCDMV branches across the state that complete all other MCS transactions. Those branches are listed below:
