Permits for Large Vehicle

Vehicles, with or without, trailers, exceeding 45 feet in length, or 8 feet in width, or 13 feet 6 inches in height shall not be operated within the central traffic district; however, such vehicles may be operated within such district upon issuance of a written permit from the chief of police or his designated agent.

Vehicles, with or without trailers, exceeding 36 feet in length, 8 feet in width, or 13 feet 6 inches in height shall not be operated on any of the streets listed in Schedule VII, Section 12.88.070; provided, however, such vehicles will be allowed to operate upon such street if such vehicle is making a pickup or delivery on such streets or must use such streets to gain the only available access to a destination where the vehicle will be making a pickup or delivery.

Trucks, with or without trailers, including pickup trucks, exceeding an overall length of 18 feet shall not be operated on any street or part of any street listed in Schedule VIIA, Section 12.88.071; provided, however, such trucks will be allowed to operate upon such streets if such a truck is making a pickup or delivery on such streets, or must use such streets to gain the only available access to the destination on that street, or must use such street to gain the only available access to that point of destination or from that point of origin.

Vehicles with or without trailers, exceeding 26 feet in length, 8 feet in width, or 13 feet 6 inches in height shall not be operated on any of the streets listed in Schedule VIIB, Section 12.88.072, between the hours of 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Provided, further, that this section shall not apply to vehicles of a political subdivision of the state performing a function of their entity.

Vehicles with or without trailers, exceeding 45 feet in length, or 8 feet in width, or 13 feet 6 inches in height shall not be operated within the following districts; provided, however, such vehicles may be operated within such district upon issuance of a written permit from the chief of police or his designated agent: South El Paso district; Piedras-Alameda district.

Maximum Length

No person shall operate any motor vehicle, truck-tractor, trailer or semitrailer on any street or alley within the city if the length thereof exceeds the maximum length of 65 feet. Nothing herein shall abrogate the limitations on the size of vehicles operated within the central traffic district or on certain streets as provided in Section 12.40.030.

Maximum Width and Height

No person shall operate any motor vehicle, truck-tractor, trailer or semitrailer on any street or alley within the city if the width or height exceeds 8 feet wide, 13 feet 6 inches high as provided for by state law and with the exceptions therein. Nothing herein shall abrogate the limitation on the size of vehicle operated within the central traffic district or on certain streets as provided in Section 12.40.030.

Maximum Weight

No person shall operate any motor vehicle, truck-tractor, trailer or semitrailer on any street or ally within the city if the weight thereof exceeds the maximum weight established by state law. Nothing herein shall abrogate the limitations on the size of vehicles operated within the central traffic district or on certain streets as provided in Section 12.40.030. The police department shall have the authority to weigh trucks which are traveling within the confines of the city which may exceed the legal load limit established by state law for roads and bridges.

Maximum Vehicle Weight Allowed on Certain Bridges and Streets

No person shall drive any vehicle on that part of the following described bridges or streets if such vehicle, with its load and any trailer or attachment, has a gross weight in excess of the amounts hereinafter set forth:

  1. The bridge immediately south of the Southern Pacific Railroad bridge across the Rio Grande, extending from Paisano Drive, across the river, to the property of the El Paso Brick Company and McNutt Road in New Mexico, with a load limit of 18,000 pounds gross vehicle weight;
  2. Courchesne Bridge across the Rio Grande with a load limit of 21,000 pounds tandem axle weight;
  3. Borderland Bridge across the Rio Grande with a load limit of 17,000 pounds tandem axle weight;
  4. County Club Road (FM 260) between Doniphan Drive and the city limits with a roadway load limit of 58,420 pounds gross vehicle weight;
  5. Westside Drive (FM 260) between Country Club Road and the city limits with a roadway load of 58,420 pounds gross vehicle weight;
  6. Gibson Veck Road between Frontera Road and the city limits with a roadway load limit of 7,000 pounds gross vehicle weight;
  7. First Avenue bridge over the Franklin Canal between Coles Street and Cypress Street with a load limit of 12,500 pounds gross vehicle weight.
