Transformer Shipping FAQs
How do you transport transformers?
Large power transformers are shipped overseas on ocean vessels and moved carefully by crane between different modes of transportation. Once new transformers arrive at their country of destination, they are transported to the substation via a specialized railcar and/or specialized flatbed trailer.
Transformers must be shipped with extreme care to avoid damaging internal components during handling and in transit. Even if there is no visible damage, this does not mean the transformer is in working condition. To track hidden damage during the transportation process, transformers can be shipped with impact recorders.
Are transformers considered hazmat?
It depends on the condition of the transformer and whether there are unsafe levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Modern transformers use silicone oils or mineral oils instead, but older transformers can still be contaminated with PCBs – affecting end-of-life transportation and disposal.
What is the difference between power transformers and distribution transformers?
Distribution transformers convert voltage from transmission lines into power to be used by commercial or residential buildings. Distribution transformers are available as single-phase or three-phase transformers, and are either pole-mounted or pad-mounted.
Large power transformers have a much higher kVa than distribution transformers, and step up or step down voltage for transmission over long distances. These transformers are also significantly bigger than distribution transformers, weighing 200,000-800,000 lbs.
