Illinois Heavy Haul Trucking FAQ
What kind of permits will I need to transport cargo through Illinois?
The driver of an oversized load needs to obtain a permit from the state of Illinois. Superload carriers will also need special permits.
When you work with Titan for your trucking needs, our truck drivers will take care of all the permitting needs required to ship your load through Illinois, as well as any other states the shipment will be transported through. That means no delays, no fines, and no hassle for our clients! That’s what makes Titan one of the best trucking companies to work with in Illinois.
Delivering your shipment safely and on time is our top priority.
Will I need an escort to transport my cargo through Illinois?
The final size of your commercial shipment determines escort requirements. At a minimum, all oversize loads/vehicles must display “Oversize Load” on both front and rear.
Different types of escorts are required based on the load size:
- One Escort: Over 110′ long, 14’6″ wide, and 14’6″ high with a high pole
- Three Escorts: Over 145′ long, 16′ wide
- State Police: Over 200′ long, 18′ wide
- Two Escorts & State Police: Over 18′ high.
Our team is committed to making the process hassle-free for our customers. Our truck drivers will make all the arrangements if pilot cars are needed for any of the locations your cargo will travel through, whether through the Prairie State, the midwest, or international shipments to Canada or Mexico.
What's considered an oversized load in Illinois?
In Illinois, the legal dimensions for standard trucks and loads, including overhang, are 53′ long, 8’6″ wide, and 13’6″ high, with a gross weight ranging from 80,000 .
Overweight applications get treated as super loads, when 5 axles, grossing over 100,000 pounds and/or over 44,000 pounds on a tandem group, or when 6 or more axles, grossing over 120,000 pounds and/or over 48,000 pounds on any axle group.

What kind of trailers do you have for handling heavy equipment?
Our specialty is transporting heavy construction, agriculture, oilfield goods, and other types of equipment throughout Illinois and across the country. Our solutions, resources, and shipping equipment are tailored to the specific needs of each business.
For example, a common option in our heavy haul trucking fleet are our flatbed trailers, which offer a maximum weight of 48,000 pounds.
For many super loads and wide loads, we’ll utilize our removable gooseneck RGN trailer. The maximum weight of this trailer is over 150,000 pounds. This option is ideal for shipping very heavy loads over the maximum height for hauling inside a trailer.
No matter what specialized transportation is required —whether tractor trailers, flatbeds, or step deck/lowboy RGN trailers—our team will match your unique cargo to the best trailer for the job, and guarantee to load and deliver it to the job site safely and professionally.
